Ostional Wildlife Reserve
From August through December, during the dark nights prior to the new moon, hundreds of Olive Ridley sea turtles will come out of the water to lay their eggs along the beaches of Ostional. 45-54 days later, the eggs will hatch and thousands of baby Olive Ridley sea turtles will attempt to make it to the Pacific Ocean. The best way to experience this event is with a proper guide, which ensures the turtles’ safety, as well as your own!

Gorgeous Beaches
Playa San Juanillo (pictured above), is a beautiful, low-key beach with white sand and turquoise blue water. Thanks to the protected status of the Ostional Wildlife Reserve, you’ll find many of the beaches in the area lack the overwhelming tourism of many beach towns, which keeps these beaches perfect for relaxing and unwinding. Explore the crystal clear water with a snorkle, soak up some sun on the beaches, or pop over to Nosara Beach for consistent ideal surfing conditions.

Unique Hikes
An approximately 2-hour hike through the 90-acre Nosara Biological Reserve will bring you through much of the diverse ecosystem of the Nicoya peninsula- both through wetland filled with mangroves and the unique dry jungle climate. With over 270 species of birds and dozens of other animals, including howler monkeys, iguanas, and even crocodiles, you’ll be snapping photos left and right.
A 3-hour drive north will get you to Rincon de la Vieja National Park - a must-see for hikers and nature lovers. This park contains an active volcano, and the hikes throughout the park will have you passing boiling mud pots, mini geysers and fumaroles, and you’ll experience the unique flora and fauna along the way.

Other Places to Explore / Experience in Guanacaste Province
The large province (nearly 4,000 square miles) of Guanacaste is an extremely diverse ecosystem, containing waterfalls, active and inactive volcanoes, unique tropical dry forests, grasslands and wetlands. We would be happy to suggest some local tourism companies that can put together your dream excursions while you are vacationing at Sueno de Abeulo.
PRO TIP: The sunsets at Playa Guiones are world-famous and should be experienced at least once!
